Frequently Asked Questions About Pickleball
Are you new to pickleball or simply looking to brush up on your knowledge? We've got you covered with answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about this exciting and rapidly growing sport!

1. What is pickleball?
Pickleball is a paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and table tennis. Played on a smaller court with a solid paddle and a perforated ball, it's easy to learn and incredibly fun for people of all ages and skill levels. There are 5 levels of game play and you can read more about this below.

2. How is pickleball played?
Pickleball can be played as a singles or doubles game. The objective is to hit the ball over the net and into the opponent's side, without letting it bounce twice. The serving team has to start the game and needs to make sure the ball clears the non-volley zone (also known as the kitchen).

3. What equipment do I need to play pickleball?
To play pickleball, you'll need a pickleball paddle, which is typically made of wood or composite materials. You'll also need a perforated plastic ball, similar to a wiffle ball, and a standard pickleball court. Comfortable attire and non-marking court shoes are recommended.

4. How big is a pickleball court?
A pickleball court is smaller than a traditional tennis court, measuring 20 feet wide and 44 feet long for doubles play. The court is divided into two equal sides by a net, and there is a non-volley zone (the kitchen) extending 7 feet on either side of the net.

5. Can children play pickleball?
Absolutely! One of the great things about pickleball is that it's accessible to players of all ages. Kids as young as five or six can learn and enjoy the game. The Foot of the Lake Pickleball Club encourages youth players.

6. Is pickleball a physically demanding sport?
While pickleball can be as competitive and physically demanding as you want it to be, it's also enjoyed by players of all fitness levels. The smaller court size and slower ball create a game that is more about strategy, finesse, and precision rather than sheer brute strength.

7. Where can I play pickleball?
Pickleball is played in a variety of venues, including dedicated pickleball courts, community centers, recreational centers, schools, and even in backyard setups. Look on our Where To Play page for courts in the FDL area.
